Black Sea resort city with a seaside garden park meeting a sandy beach and promenade

Varna is Bulgaria's maritime capital and the largest city on the country's Black Sea coast. Known as the sea garden for its famous seaside park, it combines a working port and naval base with a lively cultural life and a long summer season of festivals and visitors.

Ancient Odessos

The city stands on the site of ancient Odessos, a Greek colony founded in the sixth century BC, and the region around it has yielded some of the oldest worked gold in the world. That deep past sits beside Roman baths, medieval churches and the elegant architecture of a nineteenth- and twentieth-century resort city, giving Varna an unusually rich historic centre.

Sea garden and port

Varna's celebrated Sea Garden, running for kilometres along the shore, is the heart of the city's public life, with its beaches, gardens and cultural venues. Beyond it, the commercial port and shipyards anchor the regional economy, and the city serves as a base for Bulgaria's navy and merchant fleet alike.

A festival city

Varna has long styled itself a city of culture as well as commerce. It is known across the region for a calendar of summer festivals in music, film and theatre, many staged in an open-air setting near the sea, and for a tradition of international sporting and youth events. This festival culture made Varna a natural partner in the cultural and youth exchanges that were among the International Black Sea Club's most active pursuits, and a ready host for gatherings that mixed serious business with the hospitality of a resort in season.

Role in the Club

Representing the Bulgarian coast, Varna brought to the International Black Sea Club the experience of a city that balances heritage, tourism and a busy harbour — a combination shared by many Black Sea ports. See also the Encyclopaedia Britannica entry on Varna.
